General Characteristics

1. Can you provide me with some general information about your small group Spanish classes?

All of our small group classes only accept up to 4 students per class and meet once a week, for 2 hours each time, for 8 consecutive weeks. These classes are all conducted by native Spanish speaking tutors. :)
  • To learn more about our small group classes, please click here .

  • To find a small group for your level in your area, please click here .

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

2. What is the maximum number of students per group?

The maximum number of students per semi-private group that SpanishBlackbelt assembles is 4. Watch out for classes at colleges and traditional language institutes that often, because of putting together classrooms of 15 to 20 students each, have no alternative but to offer lecture-style classes that focus a lot on grammar and little in practice and conversation. What ends up happening after finishing a term in these circumstances is that you may understand some grammar but will not be able able to say the most simple things in Spanish. We, in contrast, focus on improving your conversational skills at all times.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

3.How often do you meet?

Groups meet 1 day a week on a two-hour session each week for 8 consecutive weeks. It is expected that you will need to attend all or almost all of these sessions in order to cover the material required to move forward to the next belt level (i.e. passing from white belt to yellow belt).

If you are interested in improving at a faster pace, please consider our Tailored One-on-One Spanish Classes or Self-Assembled Conversational Spanish Small Group Sessions.

Despite having covered all the required material, you will still need to successfully pass the next belt level examination to be granted that next belt level.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

4. What is the minimum age to join your semi private group classes?

The minimum age to join a semi private group is 16 years of age. The school assembles a group of up to 4 students of the same level mixing adults and teens from 16 years old and up. Our learning materials have been carefully designed for this age range.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

5. Can I make up a group session?

Please be aware that these are group classes. That means that, even if a student cannot make it to a class, the others will still attend, therefore the class would be considered conducted. However, considering that groups are small in size (only up to 4 students per class), it is entirely possible to reschedule a class ahead of time, provided that all participants and tutor agree with the change with at least a week in advance, subject to the tutor's availability.

Make up session will need to be scheduled in any of the remaining weeks so that you complete all 8 sessions by the expected end date (8-week term). For example, one option would be to have two sessions instead of one in any of the remaining weeks provided that your tutor is available. Another option might be to agree on extending the length of two sessions to 3 hours each so that you complete all 16 hours by the set end-date.

If a class is missed anyway, the student can review the materials covered on his/her own, with the help of our online student center, accessible by all students 24/7 at no extra cost. He/she can also be briefed by the tutor on what was done in class and what was the homework assigned, if requested. Additionally, the student could decide to purchase an extra private class to cover the material not seen.

Because all of our small group sessions start at different dates, it is normally not feasible to find another group of the same level that is synchronized with yours (covering the same material at the exact same time). Therefore, it is not practical to attend another group of similar level to make up for classes not attended.

If you foresee that you will be missing many sessions, we recommend that you consider instead, either joining an alternative group, or having private Spanish instruction, which provides you with more schedule flexibility.

If you will not be able to attend the first session of a specific group and you notice that no other students have signed up for it just yet, please email us at apply@SpanishBlackbelt.com. We may be able to reschedule the start of the group to accommodate your needs.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

6. What if there is a Holiday within my term?

If there is a National or Religious Holiday or if Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's Weeks fall within your pre-paid term, your term may be extended accordingly to compensate for that Holiday.

  • To see a list of all Holidays observed, please click here .
  • However, sessions will take place during public Holidays if both (1) student(s) and (2) teacher agree on having the session anyway.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

7. Can I start in one group and finish in another?

It is unfortunately not possible to join a group, do half a level, and then make up the rest by joining a different group. Doing so would disrupt the class dynamics and affect other students. It is better at any given time to just commit to the number of levels that you can complete from start to finish.

To read our make up policy in detail, please click here .

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

8. Will all Spanish students have my same level?

Yes. You will be place within a group with up to 3 other students that share your same level. Because we offer 9 different levels of instruction chances are indeed very high that your peers will have a level of fluency that is very similar to yours.

Levels will be assessed by our Admissions Department based on an analysis of the information you included in your application, including your self-assessment and your prior experiences learning the language.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

9. What if I am placed in the wrong level?

We aim at having every student in a group more or less at the same level of speaking proficiency. We analyze our applications carefully so that our assessments are as accurate as they can be. This assessment however may fail in very limited occasions when students over exaggerate or are too pessimistic about their current skills. We can only validate our assessment after students meet for the first few classes.

If BEFORE your first session you believe that you should have been placed at a different level, please let us know by email by replying to our acceptance/placement email. We will be happy to review our decision after gathering some more information from you. We may even have a brief assessment of your Spanish verbal ability over the phone. To learn more about how we assess your level, please visit our Color Belt System page.

If AFTER your first or second session you believe that you should have been placed at a different level, we will be happy to transfer you to any of our other available groups of your choice of a lower or higher level, provided that you let us know of this need prior to your third class.

You will be able to join this alternative level from the first session at no extra cost.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

10. Can I try a small group Spanish class before deciding?

Unfortunately not. To avoid distractions to our current students, prospective students cannot audit any of our group sessions currently being held.

For your peace of mind though, please note that new students will always have the chance to request a free change of group, or a full refund if they think our Spanish program is not compatible with their needs and/or style, provided that they communicate this request via email within the following 48 hours after their first class. After that time, they will no longer be entitled to any refund, partial or full, as continuing to attend your classes past the second session is a sign that you are satisfied with our program.

If having this guarantee does not make you feel comfortable enough to try us out just yet, please consider the following:

  • Reading testimonials of current or former students on independent third-party reviews sites such as those listed here.

  • Verifying that we have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, which certifies that we have had zero complaints since we became accredited in 2005.

Alternatively, or in addition, you can also purchase a reduced-price 55-minute sample one-on-one session meeting with the tutor assigned to your specific group at a cafe or your tutor's home for just $39.

To purchase a sample session, please proceed as follows...

  • If you have already submitted an online application for classes with us, please enter the amount listed above on the amount field that you will see after pressing the Buy Now button on our payment center page. Please do not deduct any discounts as they do not apply to sample sessions.
  • If you have not submitted an online application just yet, please do so first by entering your information on our applications page and wait for our response via email.

On this sample one-on-one session, you will have the chance to:

    1. meet your Spanish tutor prior to enrolling in group classes,

    2. get familiar with our Spanish program, teaching materials and methods, and

    3. confirm that you have been placed at the right level.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

11. Can I meet the Spanish tutor before starting?

All of our native Spanish tutors are carefully recruited and trained so that your satisfaction is guaranteed. However, if still interested in getting to know one of our tutors first, you may consider purchasing a reduced-price 55-minute sample one-on-one session meeting with the tutor assigned to your specific group at a cafe or your tutor's home for just $39.

To purchase a sample session,...

Note though that even if you opt not to purchase a sample session, you can always request a free change of group or a full refund if you think that our Spanish program is not compatible with your needs and/or style, provided that you communicate this request via email within the following 48 hours after your first class. After this time you will no longer be entitled to any refund, partial or full, as continuing to attend your classes past the second session signs that you are satisfied with our program. We cannot issue refunds past the second session because of our commitment not to accept any more students past the first session does not allow us to replace any student that changes his/her mind halfway.

If having this guarantee does not make you feel comfortable enough to try us out just yet, please consider...

  • Reading testimonials of current or former students on independent third-party reviews sites such as those listed here.

  • Verifying that we have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau which certifies that we have had zero complaints since we became accredited in 2005.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

12. Can I join a Spanish group class that focuses on an Industry or Exam preparation?

  • Unfortunately not. All of the small groups that our school assembles cover material that is not specific to any industry or profession.

  • If you are a beginner student and do not know any people with whom you can take Spanish classes together, consider still joining one of our small groups. These small groups, even though they will cover Everyday Conversational Spanish and not Industry-specific Spanish, will still provide significant value at a reduced cost, especially considering that at the beginning stage there is a lot of basic material that needs to be addressed first (also covered in these classes).

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

13. How can I be in the same group with a friend/relative?

If you are interested in joining a group together with other students, each of you will have to submit a non-commitment application through our website.

To make sure you will be in the same group, please provide the same information about your desired level, location and availability. In the application you also have a text extry field "If applying to the same session with friends, colleagues or family members, please enter their names here" where you can specify the name of the person you want to be in the group with, so that you can ensure that you will be together.

Availability and Prices

1. When is the next Spanish class starting?

Groups are assembled by SpanishBlackbelt throughout the year based on demand and availability of tutors. Normally groups will be scheduled (and show up on our system) with a few months in advance. If you are looking into signing up for classes more than 5 months in advance, please consider visiting the site a little bit closer to your desired start date.

To see a list of groups currently scheduled (including their specific prices), please click here .

If interested in joining one of our small group classes, you can submit an application and then wait up to five business days for SpanishBlackbelt to send you an acceptance letter for one or more groups that you can join. These groups will be selected according to your level and in consideration of your preferences in terms of times, days and neighborhoods where to meet. Your sessions will start at a specific date and time and will run for 8 weeks.

If you have submitted an application in the past, you do not need to reapply. Just send us an email indicating which is the specific group that you would like to be considered for.

If you do not find a group that would work for you, please re-visit our site every other month or so, or apply anyway so that you are included in our waiting list and be notified once a group becomes available.

2. When is the next Spanish class for teens starting?

Our semi-private group classes accept up to 4 students per class and meet once a week, for 2 hours each time, for 8 consecutive weeks. These groups are assembled by SpanishBlackbelt mixing adults and teens 16 years old and up of the same level.

To check the semi-private groups availability by level and location, please click here .

If you prefer to self-assemble your own group, we also offer private group classes for teens 13 years old and up that are designed to adapt to unique interests and needs. For more information on this format, please click here .

3. What if there are no groups my level?, what if there are no groups on the day that works for me?, what if groups meet too far from me?

If there are no groups...

  • your level, and/or
  • listed on the days that work best for you, and/or
  • meeting on the neighborhoods that work best for you

....consider one of the following options:

  1. Doing a search in close-by areas (if in NJ for example, consider NY, if in VA, consider DC or MD)

  2. Doing a search again in your favorite area a couple of weeks from now (new groups are added as tutors finish prior classes)

  3. Doing a search for similar levels

  4. Applying anyway so that you are included on our waiting list (you will be notified as soon as a new group becomes available)

  5. Having one-on-one classes instead (although more expensive, these sessions offer you the best value)

4. What if there are no groups of any color listed in my city?

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences that you may have encountered while interacting with our site. If you do not see any groups of any color listed on our site, or the search button does not work, it means most likely that there are no groups available just yet or that there is a shortage of tutors in your area.

Please let us know in what city you are interested in taking your Spanish classes and we will look further into it in case another kind of error might have occurred.

  • If you have already applied, please do not re-apply. While you wait for more options to become available, you can check our availability on our site every other month or so. If you find a group that works for you, please send us an email .

  • If you have not applied, please apply anyway so that you are included on our waiting list (you will be notified as soon as a new group becomes available)

In the meantime, the only option available if you want to start right away is to have one-on-one classes over Skype with one of our native Spanish tutors based in another city. Our One-on-One classes over Skype are cheaper than the in person classes and can offer more schedule options, including the possibility to meet during weekdays morning or afternoon hours, or have more classes per week. Your first class over Skype will be considered a trial class. If you finally decide that this format does not really work for you, you will still be entitled to request a full refund if requested prior to your second class.

To learn more about our Skype classes, please click here.

5. Do you assemble small groups during daytime?

Because of a lack of sufficient demand for Spanish group classes during daytime, and also considering that most of our students are adults working during these times, we unfortunately do not assemble groups during daytime on weekdays. Nevertheless, we do offer some limited number of groups classes on weekends, starting normally at 9:30am, 11:30am and 2:30pm, all meeting on 2-hour sessions.

All of the small group classes that we assemble therefore currently meet:
  • on weekdays at night from 5pm to 7pm, or from 7pm to 9pm, OR

  • on weekends during daytime from 9:30am to 11:30am, from 11:30am to 1:30pm or from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

To find out all of the groups that we currently have available for your level, please click here .

If studying during daytime on weekdays is the only option for you, please consider instead having one-on-one classes OR self-assembling your own private group. Because of their private nature, these two alternatives may provide you with more schedule options during day time. Please click here to learn more about these two alternatives.

If interested in enrolling to any of these formats, please submit a non-commitment application here .

6. Can I join a Spanish group class that has already started?

You can only join groups that have not yet started. Once a group starts it no longer accepts further participants. This is done so that members of each group do not lose the momentum, pace and focus already gained in class.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

7. What if I am the only one in the group?

Given that groups require registration of a minimum of 2 students to start, in the rare eventuality that this number is not reached two business days prior to the start of the session, you would be given some alternative options to choose from, that would include:

  • Joining another group of the same level that would already be confirmed at that time.
  • Keeping your reservation on hold for 1 or 2 more weeks while we wait for a second student to join your group.
  • Receiving an automatic full refund.

Applicants normally wait until the very last minute to enroll. There is therefore no reason to get alarmed if you are still the only one registered for a while. Many times students do not plan too much in advance. We will give you an update as we approach the start date or as soon as another student signs up.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

8. Can I pay when second student signs up?

You can submit your tuition closer to its start date but be aware that price will increase for each additional student that enrolls for a particular group. The cheapest option for you would be to be the first one joining a group.

Be aware that groups are very small in size (up to 4 students only) and that we may ran out of spaces available fairly quickly.

For your peace of mind, know that if group does not get confirmed you will be given some options to choose from such as: receiving a refund, transferring to an alternative group, waiting for that second student we need one or two more weeks, or converting your pre-paid group hours to half the number of one-on-one hours.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

9. When is the latest that I can submit my payment?

You can submit your tuition until approximately five days prior to the start of the classes, but be aware that price will increase for each additional student that enrolls for a particular group. The first student to enroll will pay the least. The second student will pay some more. The last student to enroll will pay the most.

Be aware that groups are very small in size (up to 4 students only) and that we may ran out of spaces available fairly quickly.

Note also that our prices quoted are only valid for 5 days.

If submitting your tuition after the next 5 days, please refer to our site for the current price that would apply to your specific class.

If it is not possible to submit your full tuition right now, consider applying for a 6-month interest free financing through Paypal, our online payments processor, when submitting your tuition through our Payment Center.

If needed, consider alternatively funding your classes through credit card debt. All major credit cards are accepted at this time.

To submit your tuition now, please enter your net amount due through our online payment center accessible through this link.  Your enrollment information email will be sent within 2 business days after your tuition is received.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

10. Why do apparently similar groups cost differently?

Group prices vary depending on a proprietary price algorythm.

If you are a current or former student, you can, however, sign up for any of our next level groups by just submitting the same net amount you submitted last time for the same number of levels, if more convenient for you, provided that:

  1. No more than 1 year has elapsed since you had your last term, AND

  2. You did your homework, attended all of your sessions on time and got a passing grade.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

11. How can I pay the least?

Remember that the more levels you pay up front, the cheaper each level becomes. Please look for the group of your liking and click on the multi-pricing link to learn more.

Also keep in mind that:

  • if you sign up with a friend, each of you can get an additional 8% off, and that…

  • if you sign up with two other friends, each of you can get 16% off instead.

In addition, do not forget to pay within the next 24 hours of hearing from us in order to get 5% off.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

12. Why do prices vary over time?

Our prices may vary over time due to multiple reasons. For example,...

  1. Prices may go down during a special promotion

  2. Prices may go up when we don't have sufficient tutors to meet demand

  3. Prices may go down when economies of scale are reached.

13. When and how do I submit my payment?

Levels need to be paid in advance through your preferred payment method by visiting our payment center. Payment needs to be sent after your submitted application has been approved, at least five business days before desired start date.

In order to hold the same time slot over time, consecutive terms are required to be paid five business days before your current term expires. Reservations unfortunately cannot be made unless payment is received on time.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .

14. Do I need to purchase books?

No, you do not need to purchase any books. All proprietary learning material will be accessible at no extra charge through our online student center .

All of our teaching material has been developed by our Academics Department. This material includes a syllabus that will cover topics related to the emphasis you showed interest in, Spanish grammar guides, role plays, conversations, multimedia material and much more.

To apply for one of our small group classes, please send a non-commitment online application here .
