This music festival, held annually on the 3rd week of February, is considered one of the most important musical events in the Americas. Its beginnings date back to 1959 when the some music amateurs gathered to play and present their works in a fair that was held in the Vergara gardens. The Director of Tourism and Public Relations of Viña del Mar saw in it a great opportunity to develop a music show for the city and the musicians of the region. With the support from the director of Viña del Mar Casino, he launched the first Viña del Mar Festival on February 21, 1960.
Over the years, the festival has become a highly anticipated event for the citizens of Viña and its surroundings. Once it started to be broadcasted on television, it began to attract people from different regions and countries. Today, the event constitutes the most important artistic investment in the country bringing great artists and launching many of them.
The show takes place during a week, in which musicians perform and compete for the three prizes of the festival, "Antorcha de Plata" (Silver Torch), "Antorcha de Oro" (Golden Torch) and "Gaviota de Plata" (Silver Seagull) in the two categories of songs featured, Pop music song and Folk song. Apart from a selected jury, the audience also has great power of influence openly demonstrating its acceptance or displeasure with the acts that perform. This behavior from the audience has made them gain the nickname of "El Monstruo" (The Monster) and for contestants it has also become more and more important to earn acceptance from "El Monstruo" since this usually has a big impact on an artist's popularity.
The festival also includes performances by great international music singers of the standing of Elton John, Tom Jones, Ricky Martin, Sting, Cat Stevens and Santana, among others, and encompasses genres such as rock, pop, merengue, salsa, bachata and others.
The festival’s beautiful location also offers its visitors an array of cultural and tourist attractions. Viña del Mar, often referred to “La Ciudad Jardín” (“The Garden City”), is well-know for its Casino, one of the most traditional in Chile, beautiful beaches such as Reñaca and Acapulco, the Flower Clock, Quinta Vergara, an old mansion owned by the family who founded the city, which has been turned into the Fine Arts Museum and which is right next to the amphitheater where the Song Festival takes places. Also recommended are the Museum of Archeology and History Francisco Fonck, the Botanic Gardens and the Sporting Club. Definitively a city to explore with all your senses!
