Festival de las Flores, Medellín, Colombia

Cada año en el mes de agosto, la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia, celebra la Feria de las Flores. Durante una semana de eventos y festividades, los hombres y mujeres del pueblo de Santa Elena en Medellín, trabajan sin descanso para crear preciosos arreglos florales (silletas).

Este festival tiene su origen hace aproximadamente 200 años, durante la época colonial, cuando los enfermos eran transportados desde Santa Elena a Medellín en asientos de madera en las espaldas de los silleteros. Con el tiempo, estos asientos fueron adaptados para transportar otros artículos, como verduras y flores que los silleteros vendían después en los mercados. A mediados de los años 1950, alguien advirtió la belleza del desfile de aquellas flores a través de las calles de Medellín y sugirió que se celebrase un evento para celebrarlo; así nació el festival de las flores.

A lo largo de la exhibición de flores, entre los silleteros, también desfilan bandas de música y grupos de danza. Todo el evento en su conjunto es una preciosa muestra de la cultura Paisa (Noroeste de Colombia). Fuegos artificiales inauguran y clausuran la semana del festival, y durante la semana se organizan también desfiles de automóviles de época, de perros y mascotas, un festival nacional de trova, conciertos de música folk y actividades para niños.

La Feria de las Flores ofrece multitud de opciones para turistas nacionales e internacionales, que visitan Medellín para presenciar los eventos que definen la fortaleza comercial de la ciudad y su rica herencia cultural entorno al comercio de flores (Colombia es el segundo mayor proveedor del mundo de flores, después de Holanda). Medellín es verdaderamente una ciudad para disfrutar con todos los sentidos. Estando allí uno no se puede perder la Plaza de Botero y el Museo de Antioquia, los Jardines Botánicos, la Biblioteca España, el Parque Arví y Piedras Blancas, y tomar el Metrocable para admirar la ciudad desde las alturas.

Flower Festival, Medellín, Colombia

Each year in the month of August, the city of Medellin, Colombia, hosts the Flower Festival. During the week of events and festivities, men and women from Santa Elena, a small town in the city of Medellin, work tirelessly to create the most beautiful flower arrangements (silletas).

This festival started 200 years ago, during the Colonial times, when the sick were carried down from Santa Elena to Medellin in crude wooden seats, on the backs of “silleteros”. Over time, the seats were adapted for carrying other items, such as vegetables and flowers, which the “silleteros” would take to sell in the markets. In the mid-1950’s, someone noticed the parades of beautiful flowers being hauled through the streets of Medellin and suggested an event be made to celebrate them; the flower festival was born.

Along with the flower exhibition, in between the “silleteros”, there are also marching bands and dance troupes performing. The whole event is a beautiful display of Paisa culture (Northwest of Colombia). Fireworks open and close the week of the festival, and during the week other events include a Classic and Antique car parade, a dogs and mascots walk, a National Trova festival, folk music concerts and activities for children.

The Flower Festival is packed with options for tourists and international travelers that visit Medellin to witness the series of events that define the commercial strength of the city as well as its rich cultural heritage surrounding the flower trade (Colombia is the number two supplier of fresh flowers to world markets, just behind Holland). Medellin truly is a city to experience with all senses. While being there, you cannot miss out the Botero Plaza & Museum of Antioquia, the Botanical gardens, Biblioteca España, Parque Arvi & Piedras Blancas, and take a ride in Medellin’s Metrocable, a great way to discover the city from the heights.
