Guatemala es un país lleno de cultura y tradiciones. Es por eso que siempre se ha destacado del resto de los países de Centro América no sólo por su ciudad antigua sino también por otros lugares únicos que la hacen especial como es el caso de El parque Nacional Tikal, el Lago Atitlán y Semuc Champey y las Cuevas de Lankin.
Pero quizás a estas alturas ya has escuchado de todos estos lugares que puedes visitar en Guatemala e incluso probablemente ya has ido a alguno de ellos. Sin embargo, hay otro atractivo turístico único del cual quizás todavía no has escuchado y nos referimos al Festival de los Barriletes Gigantes de Guatemala.
Un poco de historia
Dice la leyenda del municipio de Sumpango que ese día, los espíritus malignos llegan al cementerio a invadirlo para molestar a los espíritus buenos que descansan allí por lo que estas últimas empiezan a divagar por las calles del lugar. Dicho problema se presentaba todos los años por lo que los habitantes de Sumpango le consultaron a los ancianos sobre qué podían hacer.
La solución de ellos fue que la mejor manera de espantar a estos espíritus era con el choque del papel contra el viento. Es por eso que los lugareños empezaron a armar y hacer barriletes y cometas lo que hizo que los espíritus buenos reposaran tranquilos y ya no vagaran más por el municipio.
En qué consiste el Festival de los Barriletes
El Festival de Barriletes gigantes de Santiago Sacatepéquez es celebrado todos los años los días 1ero y 2 de Noviembre. Este es uno de los eventos culturales más importantes de Santiago Sacatepéquez y consiste en construir enormes barriletes. Además durante el día de los difuntos o día de todos los Santos, los pobladores se acercan a visitar las tumbas recién pintadas de sus antepasados para depositar ofrendas florales y, a su vez, orar por ellos.
Cientos de adultos, jóvenes y niños acuden al cementerio durante la mañana y parte de la tarde, el cual está localizado en una colina desde donde el paisaje es espectacular, y con ellos llevan hermosos barriletes gigantes con diversas formas y colores diseñados por lo general con papel de china y varas de castilla bastante gruesas.
Los niños son los que por lo general sueltan los barriletes por lo que los verás apoyados sobre el piso en espera de que se dé la señal para soltar por fin los barriletes. Luego de que alguien da la orden, los barriletes son soltados y empiezan a elevarse en el cielo llenándolo de una gran variedad de formas y colores.
La idea detrás de lanzar al cielo los barriletes es que al hacerlo, el fabricante del barrilete está también elevando sus sueños por lo que mantenerlos en el aire el mayor tiempo posible y al alcanzar más altura supone que las aspiraciones y sueños de cada uno de ellos son más grandes y más posibles de cumplirse. Se dice que además los barriletes son mensajeros de paz.
Te podemos asegurar que el espectáculo de los Barriletes Gigantes en Guatemala es algo que no te puedes perder en tu próxima visita. Eso sí, asegúrate de hacerlo en el mes de Noviembre que es cuando se realiza dicho festival.

Giant Kites Festival in Guatemala
Guatemala is a country full of culture and traditions. That is why it has always stood out from the rest of the Central American countries not only for its ancient city but also for other unique places that make it special such as the Tikal National Park, Lake Atitlán and Semuc Champey and the Lankin Caves.
But perhaps by now you have heard of all these places and you have probably even been to some of them. However, there is another unique tourist attraction that you may not have heard of yet and we refer to the Festival of the Giant Kites of Guatemala.
A bit of history
The legend of the municipality of Sumpango says that on that day, evil spirits come to the cemetery to invade it to disturb the good spirits that rest there, so the latter begin to wander through the streets of the place. This problem arose every year, so the inhabitants of Sumpango consulted the elders about what they could do.
Their solution was that the best way to scare these spirits was with the collision of the paper against the wind. That is why the locals began to assemble and make kites which made the good spirits rest calm and no longer wander through the municipality.
What does the Kite Festival consist of?
The Giant Kite Festival of Santiago Sacatepéquez is celebrated every year on November 1st and 2nd. This is one of the most important cultural events in Santiago Sacatepéquez and it consists of building huge kites. In addition, during the day of the dead or All Saints' Day, the inhabitants come to visit the freshly painted graves of their ancestors to deposit floral offerings and, in turn, pray for them.
Hundreds of adults, youth and children go to the cemetery during the morning and part of the afternoon, which is located on a hill from where the landscape is spectacular, and with them they carry beautiful giant kites with different shapes and colors, usually designed with Chinese paper and thick rods of castile.
Children are the ones who usually release the kites, so you will see them leaning on the ground waiting for the signal to finally release the kites. After someone gives the order, the kites are released and begin to rise into the sky, filling it with a wide variety of shapes and colors.
The idea behind launching the kites into the sky is that by doing so, the manufacturer of the kite is also raising their dreams, so keeping them in the air for as long as possible and reaching higher means that the aspirations and dreams of each of them are larger and more likely to be fulfilled. The kites are also said to be messengers of peace.
We can assure you that the show of the Giant Kites in Guatemala is something that you cannot miss on your next visit. Of course, make sure you do it in the month of November, which is when the festival takes place.
